Country Calendar For Thursday, March 6, 2014: 1820- The Missouri Compromise was enacted by the U.S. Congress and signed by President James Monroe. The act admitted Missouri into the Union as a slave state, but prohibited slavery in the rest of the northern Louisiana Purchase territory. 1836- The thirteen-day siege of the Alamo by Santa Anna and his army ended. The Mexican army of three thousand men defeated the 189 Texas volunteers. 1857- The Dred Scott decision was handed down by the Supreme Court. It said that black Americans were not full citizens, after an escaped slave named Scott filed a lawsuit to have himself declared free. His owner set him free anyway and Scott went on to become a hotel porter. Within a few years the slavery issue was resolved. 1899- Aspirin was patented by German researchers Felix Hoffman and Hermann Dreser. 1902- The Madrid Football Club (later known as Real Madrid) was founded by a group of fans in Madrid, Spain. 1950- Silly Putty was introduced at the International Toy Fair in New York by Peter Hodgson. It was invented by accident in 1943 during research into potential rubber substitutes for use by the United States in World War II. 1964 - Skip Ewing was born in Redlands, California. 1964- Elizabeth Taylor divorced Eddie Fisher after five years of marriage. It was her fourth divorce. 1976- Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom died at age 68. Elected to boxings Hall of Fame in 1972, he was a former light-heavyweight boxing champion who achieved additional fame in his movie career. 1976- Dorothy Hamill won the world figure skating championship in Goteborg, Sweden. It was announced last week that she’ll be competing on the new season of Dancing with the Stars. 1978- Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt was shot and left partially paralyzed while walking down a street in Lawrenceville, GA. He had been on trial for distributing obscene materials. 1981- Walter Cronkite appeared on his last episode of CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. He had been on the job 19 years. 1982- National Basketball Association history was made when San Antonio beat Milwaukee 171-166 in three overtime periods to set the record for most points by two teams in a game. The record was beaten on December 13, 1983 by the Pistons and the Nuggets when they played to a final score of 186-184. 1985- Yul Brynner played his famous role as the king in The King and I in his 4,500th performance in the musical. The actor, age 64, opened the successful production on Broadway in 1951. 1987- Lethal Weapon starring Danny Glover and Mel Gibson opened in movie theaters. 1988- With the 1,205th win of her career, Julie Krone became the winningest female jockey in racing history. 1990 - Clara Henningsen of The Henningsens was born in Atwood, Illinois. 1997- Britains Queen Elizabeth II launched the first official royal Web site. 1998- The movie The Big Lebowski starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman opened in theaters. 1999 - George Jones was seriously injured in a single-car accident in Nashville. 1999 - Sara Evans single No Place That Far went number one on the Billboard chart. 2000- A federal jury convicted three New York City police officers of covering up the brutal assault on Abner Louima in a police station mens room in 1997, but their conviction was reversed by a federal appeals court in February 2002 on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The cop who committed the assault, Justin Volpe, is currently serving a 30-year sentence. 2003 - George Jones was among the recipients of the National Medal of Arts at the White House. The award was presented by President George W. Bush. 2004 - Rascal Flatts album, Melt, was certified double-platinum. 2005- Actress Teresa Wright (Mrs. Miniver) died in New Haven, Conn., at age 86. 2005- Making her debut with John Sterling on WCBS-AM (880), the radio flagship of the Yankees, Suzyn Waldman became just the third woman to be a full-time color commentator in big league history. 2006- Former Minnesota Twins outfielder and Hall of Fame member Kirby Puckett passed away, just one day after he suffered a stroke. He was 45. 2006 - Miranda Lamberts single Kerosene was certified gold. 2007 - Jason Aldeans self-titled album earned a platinum certification. 2007- Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll premiered on the CW. 2007- Vice President Dick Cheneys former chief of staff, I. Lewis Scooter Libby, was convicted of lying and obstructing an investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plames identity. 2009 - Gloriana made its debut on the Grand Ole Opry. 2012 - Garth Brooks, Connie Smith and Hargus Pig Robbins were announced as the 2012 inductees in the Country Music Hall of Fame. 2012 - Luke Bryans 4-song EP, Spring Break 4... Suntan City, was released. 2012 - Randy Houser and his wife, Jessa Lee, welcome their son, West Yantz Houser, in Nashville. 2012 - Jerrod Niemanns tour bus catches on fire in in Chattanooga, Tennessee. No one was injured in the blaze.
