Cult-C. Media and Politics Konstantine Klioutchkine, Pomona College This Seminar is available to all students. No background required. Recommended for students interested in media and cultural studies This course examines the role of the media in our political knowledge, opinions, and behavior. We will explore political discourse on social networks, the internet, and television in the United States, Russia, and Europe. The central questions of the course will be about our own relation to the mediated political process: to what extent are we consumers and producers of political speech? In what ways are we subjects to and agents of mediated politics? What kinds of control over our political experience can we have? The theoretical reference points for our discussion will include Theodor Adorno’s The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception, Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, and Jonathan Beller’s The Cinematic Mode of Production (excerpts will be provided in class). nyi.spb.ru/seminars/cultural/cultural_15.html
