Colonialism was a major symptom of the great inequalities between nation and group of people. +Imperialism: unequal human and territorial relationship, usually inform of an empire, based on idea of superiority and practice of dominance, and involving the extension of authority and control of one state or people over another. 4. Development is a process of change that improves the wellbeing of society. 14. The basic goal of improvement is improving the economy of the country and raising the quality of life of the people living there. 15. There are 5 stages of development: -traditional society: a country has a subsistence economy based mainly upon farming. -beginning of secondary industry: a country has developed it primary industry and most of it product are exported. -economic take off: a country has a rapidly growing secondary industry as a result of improved technology and available capital to process raw material. -drive to maturity: a country had rapid economic growth which spread to the rest of the country. -high mass consumption 16. The characteristic of developing and developed country are the type of economic activity level of technology, population growth and infrastructure. 17. Developed countries: -ploughing is mechanized -highly industrialized with more people employed -the birth rate is declining and low -have access to a large number of doctor, better equipped hospital and more extensive medical technology to diagnose and treat illness +Developing countries: -using traditional method to hoe land -working in primary and secondary industry -high birth rate and hence a high population growth rate -few doctor to tend to the need of the sick -low standard of housing with a few amenities -have no access to potable water 18. Population size affect development by ensures a large labor force and the large number from a potential market for locally produced goods. 19. Transport affect development economic development is hindered if there is a poor transport network. Without an efficient network of road or railway, it will take longer time to transport finished product to market and cost will increase. 20. Educational facility affects development: a poor educational infrastructure that lack sufficient school and institution of higher learning maybe unable to improve the rate of literacy among the population. 21. The shortages of doctor and nurse, lack of medical facilities such as clinic and hospital and absence of safe drinking water and proper sanitation may affect the people health. This can result in low productivity and income for the country. 22. Developing countries suffer from a lack of capital and this impedes development, even if these country mange to purchase or obtain machinery but they lack the technology know-how to use technology 23. The presence of natural resources affects development because the countries that have a lot of resources provided them many advantages. Moreover, countries that possess energy resources such as petroleum, raw materials have been able to utilized revenue from sealing these resources to finance development project in their own country. 24. The physical factor such as climate, relief and soil affect development because in some countries which depend on agriculture they need the suitable climate and rich soil and relief to do farming which can earn many benefits. In contrast, when the area with harsh climate, poor relief and soil like East Africa, the results of agriculture production is difficult and unreliable, so it influence to the economic in country. 25. GDP gross domestic product: the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year, except income received abroad. Form: GDP = C + I + E + G. 26. GNP gross national product: the total value of all goods and services produced in a country, usually in a single year. Form: GNP = C + G + I + NX + NFP.
