Current Affairs India – 23 September 2013 1. “Seekho Aur Kamao” (Learn and Earn) Progrmme Launched by Union Government of India. Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India launched a central sector scheme for Skill Development of Minorities today. Main objective of the scheme is to bring down unemployment rate of minorities during 12th Plan period (2012-17). 2. The Reserve Bank today announced a 13-member committee, including former Citibank CEO Vikram Pandit and Axis Bank chief Shikha Sharma, to frame a “clear and detailed” vision for financial inclusion/deepening across the country. The ‘Committee on Comprehensive Financial Services for Small Businesses and Low-Income Households’ has been tasked to develop a comprehensive monitoring framework to track the progress of financial inclusion and deepening efforts on a nationwide basis. The committee is headed by Nachiket Mor,member on the RBI’s Central Board of Directors. 3. Deutsche Bank has become the first bank in India to use the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s window to swap fresh foreign currency non-resident (bank), or FCNR (B), dollar funds. Deutsche Bank has raised about $450 million FCNR (B) deposits from about 10 nonresident Indians and swapped it with the central bank. 4. PepsiCo Inc. has appointed Sanjeev Chadha to the position of Chief Executive Officer, Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA). In this role, he will report to Chairman and CEO, Indra K. Nooyi, and oversee all aspects of PepsiCo’s AMEA business. Chadha most recently served as President, PepsiCo, Middle East and Africa. 5. India’s Deepika Kumari has settled for a silver medal at the Archery World Cup in Paris, France. In the finals, Deepika lost to the Korean Olympic champion Ok-Hee Yun, 6-4, and had to settle for a Silver medal. This was Deepika’s third successive silver in the World Cup. 6. Grappler Sandeep Tulsi Yadav has created history by winning India’s first-ever medal in the 66kg Greco-Roman category at the Senior World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Sandeep defeated Serbia’s Aleksandar Maksimovic, 4-0 to bag the bronze medal. This is India’s best-ever show at the World Championships with three medals, Amit Kumar Dahiya and Bajrang Kumar had won a silver and a bronze medal earlier in respective categories. 7. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli was appointed as the brand ambassador of the Border Security Force (BSF) yesterday. BSF is the second largest paramilitary force of India that guards two crucial Indian borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Virat Kohli was roped in for bolstering the appeal of 2.5 lakh personnel capable strong BSF. 8. India’s top singles player Somdev Devvarman returned to top-100 after a gap of one year and nine months as he jumped three places to 98 in the latest ATP singles rankings, issued today. Somdev had achieved a career-best rank of 62 in 2011 but struggled after that as a shoulder injury halted his progress. In the doubles, US Open champion Leander Paes (5), Rohan Bopanna (7) and Mahesh Bhupathi (10) remained unchanged in top-10.
