Current Affairs India – 4 August 2013 1. Arundhati Bhattacharya has been appointed the managing director and chief financial officer of the State Bank of India (SBI). She is the first woman managing director at SBI. Arundhati succeeded Diwakar Gupta who retired a couple of days ago. 2. The Government approved 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in the telecom sector from existing FDI limit of 74%. After this move foreign companies operating in India like Vodafone and Telenor can have complete ownership of the business. 3. After remaining in an elite group of countries with market capitalizations of above a trillion dollar for a little over four years, India lost that tag as the rupee closed at an all-time low level of 61.10 to a dollar and the stock markets fell for the eighth consecutive session on last Friday. On Friday, BSEs market capitalization fell to USD 998 billion. 4. Veteran music director V Dakshinamoorthy passed away at his residence in Mylapore on Friday evening in CHennai. He was 94. Endearingly called as Swamy by the film fraternity and his fans, Dakshinamoorthy has given music to hundreds of film songs in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi over the last seven decades. 5. Indian Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja has become the first Indian bowler to top the bowlers’ chart in the latest ICC ODI Player Rankings after former captain Anil Kumble claimed the iconic position way back in 1996. Jadeja, who took five wickets in five matches during India’s recently-concluded ODI tour of Zimbabwe, has jumped four places to join West Indies’ off-spinner Sunil Narine on top of the list. 6. Indian girls created history by winning country’s first ever bronze medal in the junior women hockey World Cup as they defeated England on 3-2 penalties on Sunday. Hassan Rouhani, who won the recent elections in Iran, took oath as Iran’s seventh President at a ceremony yesterday. Rouhani was officially endorsed by the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Khamenei yesterday for a four-year term. 2. Ruta Meilutyte of Lithiania became the first swimmer to break a world record at the 15th FINA World Championships as she won the 100 metres in 1 minute and 4.35 seconds. The 15th FINA World Championships are currently held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
