Current Affairs India – 9 August 2013 1. Parliament has approved the new Companies Bill yesterday that will make sweeping changes in the way firms operate and are regulated and replace a nearly six-decade-old legislation. The new law would require companies that meet certain set of criteria, to spend at least two percent of their average profits in the last three years towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. 2. Rakesh Sethi has taken charge as the Executive Director of the Union Bank of India. Before that he was the General Manager with Bank of India and headed the National Banking position in Southern India. 3. Rising shuttler P V Sindhu on has created history yesterday by becoming the first Indian woman singles player to ensure a medal at the World Badminton Championships at Guangzhou, China. Sindhu defeated localfavourite Shixian Wang by 21-18, 21-17 to enter the semifinals. At the same time, Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap both bowed out in the quarterfinal. A podium finish remained elusive for Saina Nehwal as she suffered a straight-game defeat. 4. Indian wrestler Virender Singh did the nation proud as he won a gold medal in the men’s 74 kg freestyle event at the Deaflympics in Bulgaria today. The Delhi-based deaf and mute Indian defeated Oguz Donder of Turkey to win the coveted medal.
