Currently Im working on arranging all the results and newspaper clippings etc. into some kind of order by wrestler. Obviously any kind of listings for an individual star will always be a work in progress, but they can prove interesting nonetheless. I will keep adding to them and post updated versions as and when I feel they are worthy of being posted. To start with here are a selection of results for William Muldoon from 1880-1885: 1880 JANUARY 1880 JANUARY 19, 1880 (MONDAY) Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, New York Attendance: 4,000 Referee: Harry Hill Umpires: Edward Bobby (Muldoon) & Capt. Palmer (Bauer) World Graeco-Roman Championship - Two out of Three Falls 1 - William Muldoon the Wrestling Policeman def. Thiebaud Bauer (of France), Two Falls to One (F1 00:43:00 - F2 00:20:30 - F3 ??:??:?? - C 01:03:30+) - NEW CHAMPION Notes: The New York Times mentions the apperance of the crowd in attendance was unusually respectable. The famous English champion wrestler Edward Bibby was in Muldoons corner and Capt. A. H. Palmer was in Bauers. Harry Hill replaced James Pilkington (of the Broadway Squad) as referee at the last minute. It was announced by Muldoon that win or lose, he would wrestle but one match more, before the contest. MARCH 1880 MARCH 23, 1880 (TUESDAY) Madison Square Garden, New York, New York Attendance: 3,000 Tickets: $0.50 & $1 Referee: Prof. McClellan World Graeco-Roman Championship 1 - [William] Muldoon (c) Vs. [William] Miller, Time-Limit Draw (07:00:00) Note: Time was called at 8:20AM. The match was described as being boring and it fans were unhappy with it: The few spectators who remained were unanimous in the opion that $10 or 10 days would be a very light sentence. DECEMBER 1880 DECEMBER 25, 1880 (SATURDAY) Benefit for the Family of Michael (Patrick) Cavanagh Lion Brewery Hotel Hall, New York, New York Attendance: 400+ Benefit: $300+ Referee: James Magowan 1 - William Muldoon def. Martin Muldoon (00:04:00) Notes: Muldoon is listed as American Graeco-Roman Champion. Cavanagh died in a tragic accident, Muldoon did not know the man, but the police department wanted to organize a benefit for the family. Muldoon volunteered to wrestle to raise money and he even took presents round to the family on Christmas Eve. Originally he wanted to face amateurs, however, the amateurs were warned that if they took part in a match with a professional it could stop them from competing as an amateur again. Muldoon offered an open challenge to all comers. Bau & Martin wrestled twice as no-one was willing to challenge Muldoon. Martin Muldoon was the younger brother of William. 1881 JANUARY 1881 JANUARY 27, 1881 (THURSDAY) Terrace Garden Theatre, New York, New York Attendance: About 2000 Referee: Professor William C. McCellan Greco-Roman Championship Medal - Two out of Three Falls 1 - William Muldoon (of New York City) (c) Vs. Clarence Whistler the Wonder of the West (of Kansas), Curfew Draw (06:00:00) Notes: Muldoon weighed 198 pounds, Whistler 172. Quigley was Muldoons trained, Patrick Kelly his umpire. Whistlers umpire was Samuel Berry (of Philadelphia). Muldoon was not favored by the audience. In the fifth hour cries of, Get up, Muldoon, and give us a show or, or Ill claim my dollar back. When Muldoon tried to combat these cries by making a clear effort only to be overpowered by Whistler, fans could be heard shouting things such as, Let him up and see if he can stand. John McMahon, Edwin Bibby, Mackeson and Thiebaud Bauer were in attendance. At the end of each hour of wrestling the duo stopped for a 10 minute rub down and rest, with exception of between the fifth and sixth hour where there appears to have been only five minutes. Neither man wanted the bout to end in a draw and neither did the audience. Time was called when the owner of the venue turned the gas lights and the main lights off shortly before four in the morning. People in the audience offered to pay an extra $1 a piece to turn the lights back on to continue with the contest, but the owner would not agree. It was agreed that they would meet at a later date to decide a winner. Edwin Bibby, Two Falls to None (F1 00:30:00 - F2 01:10:00+ - C 01:40:00+) Notes: The match was postponed from afternoon until evening due to Muldoon being delayed. The crowd began crying that they had been scammed and foul language filled the air. The New York Times suggests the manager of the building would have been harmed had the police not intervened. In the end they all agreed to quieten down and trust that the match would indeed take place later. Muldoon announced the reason he had been delayed was because of his super intendent holding a personal vendetta against him, forcing him to stay at the station house. Its said Bibby took to drinking, The famous fighting whisky of the First Ward, during the time that passed since leaving the arena for the afternoon about that Muldoon failed to show for.
