DAPs Seputeh MP Teresa Kok today rubbished accusations that she was out to insult PAS by attending a beer festival that some in the Islamic party have been opposing. Kok, who was at Carlsbergs Oktoberfest in Petaling Jaya on Friday, was responding to an Utusan Malaysia report accusing PKR and DAP MPs of disrespecting PAS by attending the event. I did not insult anyone... it was a private activity. Its a non-Muslim event and it has nothing to do with other faiths or religions. Why does Utusan want to intervene with the programmes I attend? she told journalists at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon after an anti-Sedition Act press conference. She added that PAS leaders had the right to oppose the function, but it was her civil liberty to attend such events. I have also attended many Chinese dinners where they do yum seng (toasts), does it mean I cant attend any such events like that in future? Umno-owned Utusan today found it newsworthy to frontpage the DAP and PKR elected representatives Oktoberfest revelry, suggesting Menteri Besar Azmin Ali was powerless to act against DAP. DAP is more powerful in Selangor, PKR is just a pak turut (yes man), wrote its columnist under the pseudonym Awang Selamat. Kok also defended her Facebook posting where she uploaded her photograph at the event holding up a pint of brew. In her posting she said, I think the controversy has given the event free publicity. It has also created the curiosity of many defiant non-Muslims like me to attend the event. Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, speaking to journalists at the PAS headquarters, insisted that it is the non-Muslims right, including DAPs, to attend the Oktoberfest. We do not support (the event) but it is their right, he said. The three-day event which started on Friday at 1Utama had generated controversy after PAS Temerloh MP Nasrudin Hassan criticised its promotional material. Subsequently, there was pressure from several conservative Muslim groups for the event to be scrapped despite such events being having been held regularly in the past without fuss. As a show of solidarity, several lawmakers from PKR and DAP attended the function on Friday. [Malaysiakini] malaysiakini/news/277337
