DARK OF THE SUN. With fewer DVDs being released, the print-on-demand market is increasing, and the best of these services is Warner Archive. A while ago, Entertainment Weekly wrote a rave review about a 1967 action film DARK OF THE SUN, about Rod Taylor and Jim Brown as mercenaries in a civil war in the Congo. Print-on-demand DVDs arent released on Netflix, so I waited for the occasional 5 for $50 sale that Warner Archive has. I watched DARK OF THE SUN yesterday and am still marveling at how excellent it is. The structure of action films in the 1960s was to have 3 or 4 action sequences separated by a lot of dialogue. But this one (reminding me of what I tried to do in my novel FIRST BLOOD) is non-stop, with some of the best stunt work Ive ever seen. No CGI. Human beings doing amazing stunts without a lot of frantic editing. This astonishing action film was directed by Jack Cardiff, who photographed several of the Powell/Pressburger films including BLACK NARCISSUS and THE RED SHOES. He also photographed THE AFRICAN QUEEN and was nominated for an Oscar for his camera work on RAMBO (FIRST BLOOD PART II). Sign up for Warner Archives mailing list and buy DARK OF THE SUN when they send you a notice about a 5 for $50 sale. There are plenty of other classics to choose from to fill out the order.
