DID YOU KNOW: All Jewish men and all married jewish women must have a covering on their head, when they pray. Therefore, a man that doesnt usually where a kippa/yarmulka/skullcap, should keep one handy, for when he needs to pray. Likewise, married ladies (as well as divorced, widowed, etc.), should have a scarf, doily, etc, when they pray. This is irregardless of whether they cover their hair for modesty reasons or not. For example, when lighting shabbat candles, the ladies should have a scarf handy, if they dont usually cover their hair. (i know of a lady, that bought a beautiful white scarf just for this purpose, of lighting shabbat candles.) Also, a lady that generally covers her hair, but not in the privacy of her home, should still have a hat/scarf handy, for when she says brachot at home. It is forbidden for a lady to wear a kippa because its considered menswear. Single girls are exempt - unless you follow the ben ish chai. (He ruled that single girls should also have a head covering while praying.) ***As always, please consult with your local orthodox rabbi for advice.
