DISCLAIMER: I do not have a chid in school (not that it would have mattered to me because my parents had no clue what my math class was like growing up. I did this thing called working hard and figuring it out myself or asking questions in class. My understanding was my responsibility. Making sure my homework was done was up to me. If I was stressed over it, I was reminded life is stressful. Im the one who got the computer out or before that the phone book [gasp] and told my teacher as early as the third grade I didnt understand tonights work. If I would have blamed bad grades on the teacher or how she was teaching I would have been told by my father I was third in the state in trigonometry you can figure it out and the way I was taught and the way my parents were taught were not the same.); nor have I taught it to a class full of students . This is from my experience with common core and how I was taught how adding and subtracting really works at 19 years old. This is the first time I have ever been on the opposite side of my political party. Honestly, this isnt a political issue for me. If the way children do math is to you, then so be it! There is so much ignorance surrounding common core its actually humorous. The first thing I want to get out there are the standards are only math and English (whoa that feels good to clarify). Secondly, Just because you are choosing to not understand something, it does not make it wrong. Not to offend anyone, but if you cant see the patterns that this way is using and why they work, then you did not receive a complete understanding of how numbers work. Im sorry the exactly one way you learned how to do something made math your least favorite subject. Maybe if you were taught to have options (including the old way ) you would have chosen the way that works best for you. If you feel the old way is much faster/easier for you I am so happy! You have made math comfortable for you. However, not all of us can agree. For me, I did not have as good of an understanding of math as I thought. My 100% in college statistics my senior year of high school did not prepare me for my first education math class. What was it you ask? Elementary math starting with the 1st grade, a class that I barely pulled a C in. This was not because of common core, but because I had been born and raised on meaningless tricks that I had forgotten or had shielded the fact I had NO clue what was going on. After that class, I can do things in my head (even fractions!) that would have taken me forever with pen and paper if I could have done it at all. Its made my life easier! Go figure! Is there imperfections with common core? Obviously. Is it voodoo? No. Im not asking you to hop on board. Im not asking you to like it. All I am asking if you would look at it and see how it works. Look at the old way and see if you can explain all of the steps that go into a long division problem. COUNT how many steps you take to achieve an answer. Maybe you will see its not as easy or as quick as you think. And please to God before you share something bashing common core, make sure its even common core at all. These are just my opinions. I KNOW most of you disagree. I am aware the general population hates common core. I just see it differently :)
