DPZ’s The Village of Providence in Huntsville, Alabama has been awarded by the NAHB as Community of the Year -- congratulations to developers/Town Founders David and Marsha Slyman; Todd Slyman; the Providence design, development, and construction team; and Town Architect and Friend of DPZ Steve Mouzon! Steve writes, Providence is an interesting place on several counts, including: • It commissioned the first Transect-based architectural pattern book. • The village center grew one Transect zone upward before it was ever built. • It is home to two 200-room hotels, large offices, and a broad collection of small retailers and service providers. • It’s the coolest place to be in the metro area on a Friday night. • Coming out of the Great Recession, it had $40 million worth of construction in progress at a time most places were still not moving. • It was the development site of several new architectural techniques in recent years. • It was the coming-out party for the New Urban Guild, where the organization first got noticed by top-tier New Urbanists.
