Dad. Four themes of dad at his happiest--1) at the racetrack (picture River Downs), after cashing on a horse that paid well. Dad always looked for the overlooked horse (What a Mountain, a cheap 10 year old when I was about 10 years old, was a favorite of his); 2) A rainy July day at Fenway Park in 1986--we sat for 3 hours in the rain, were about to leave when the rain stopped, and we got to sit in the bleachers right behind the bullpens for about 5 innings before we had to leave to get back to North Station in time to catch the train back to Salisbury Beach; and 3) summer mornings at the beach, mom making fried dough and dad beginning the journey through all the newspapers (which I read along with him--Boston Globe, Boston Herald, New York Times, and Lawrence Eagle-Tribune), ready for a day in a beach chair, sometimes walking along the waterline, sometimes getting in, always listening to the radio. Happy Fathers Day, dad (dad died April 18, 2006); and 4) his days doing Doerr to the Movies--I got to see the advance preview of Raiders of the Lost Ark with dad in a packed Kenwood movie theater.
