Daily Tips: Eye Shadow Base verses Eye Shadow Primer Even though eye shadow base, sometimes will be called eye shadow primer and vice versa, but beware, Primer and Base are NOT the same thing... they are a type of cosmetic product that is applied to the eyelids before eye shadow. They are used to create a smooth canvas on the eyelids onto which eye shadow is applied. Eye shadow base has other uses as well, and may be able to be used underneath the eyes to hide dark circles, conceal imperfections, or as a highlighter to brighten the eyes. Eye shadow base is normally a cream product used to intensify the pigmentation of eye shadow. Unlike primers, these don’t always prevent creasing (the texture is thicker) but they will really brighten up your eyes. Base often comes in jars or pots. Base also comes in a cream eye shadow and comes in many different colors which may intensify the eye shadow. White is the best base shade for making eye shadow stand out. Eye shadow base is also best applied with a finger or brush! You only need a small amount or you’ll see creasing. You can wear both primer and base… base would go on after primer. Primer controls eyelid oils better than base would alone. The primary purpose for using an eye shadow base, however, is to allow the eye shadow to adhere to the eyelids better, and to last all day without wearing down. It can also help to make creases in the eyes appear less noticeable. People with oily skin in particular often find that using a primer on their eyes before applying eye makeup is a good way to prevent the skin from becoming oily and the makeup from wearing off. VS. When applying primer for eye shadow, use a makeup sponge or brush, and apply an even layer over the entire eyelid. Also apply to dark circles under the eyes, as well as to the brow bone and corners of the eyes if necessary. Then, simply apply eye makeup as usual, and it will look great all day. Primer is used for several things… to create a perfect canvas for the lid while extending the life of your shadow. Primer creates a barrier between the natural oils in the skin and your makeup. Most primers are a liquid-type product, similar to a concealer. Often they will come with a doe-foot applicator, or in a squeeze tube. It is easiest to apply eye primer with your fingers. When it comes to primer, you don’t want to use too much, or you’ll negate the primer’s effects all together. A few drops of primer will do for your entire eye. Blend primer across the eyelid, until it mostly disappears onto the skin. Most primers are skin-colored, but some have a different tint. Either way, the color should be very faint on the eye. An eye shadow primer’s main purpose is to prep the eye for and to help prevent the natural oils of your eyelids to break down your eye shadow throughout the day. They also help create a smooth, blendable surface to apply eye shadow while intensifying their vibrancy and pigmentation. Primers can also help neutralize the color of your lids so that discolorations don’t show thru the shadow, basically giving you the benefits of a light-weight concealer. Primers tend to work better with powders rather than creams (layering two fluid textures on top of one another, she explained, can cause sliding and settling). If a primer or base still creased the eye shadow, here are a few reasons why, 1. Theres not enough protection for the oily lid 2. Applied too much 3. Applied too little 4. They eye shadow may not be the best quality — remember, great pigmentation doesn’t always mean great quality 5. In the worst case, creating an allergic reaction to the ingredients in a primer or base and making the product unusable *Typically if you want to use both primers and bases, you want to use the base after youve put on the primer.
