Danny Mayer: I agree with the LFUCG Bicycle and Pedestrian - TopicsExpress

Danny Mayer: I agree with the LFUCG Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) that two-way street conversion will have net negative effects for bikers as well as walkers. Its another reason I took the unpopular leadership position against conversion. In December 2013, BPAC members met with two-way consultants StanTec to discuss how changes to downtown traffic patterns might effect walking and biking downtown. Notably, until BPAC contacted StanTec, the study included no specific metrics for calculating impacts on biking and walking, nor had it included bike/ped stakeholders in its conversion studies--curious for a project thats supposed to make downtown more walkable and liveable. Heres BPAC head Kenzie Gleason from the December meeting notes speaking to why conversion is bad for bikers: Kenzie Gleason said it is important to understand that, under two-way conversion, there would be a loss of dedicated bike facilities and extra operating space for cyclists. This would be a negative impact of the conversion. This has the potential to decrease cycling or not encourage increased cycling downtown.
