Date: 28-08-13 Dear Sir/Madam Subject: Walter Sisulu University Status Quo Allow me to pass my warm and fraternal greetings on behalf of Walter Sisulu University former students. I have been instructed by the task team of WSU Convocation/Alumni to write to you this communiqué which serves to inform you about the status quo of the Walter Sisulu University. We are confronted by a calamity of having our University which is held at ransom by the impasse of salary negotiation between the staff Union’s and the University management. The Union leadership is embarking on strike for salary increase at this point in time. The negotiations for this salary increase started as early as March, but there were no fruitful out comes since then. Now the Unions had been on strike for the past 6 weeks. The management has applied the Lock Out rule since the 29th July 2013 whilst the strike started on 23rd July 2013, also the no work, no pay principle applied on the 15th August 2013. Now our greatest concerned is about the students who are not being serviced in terms of teaching and learning. The students are now vulnerable and disgruntled. It has been a horrible 6 weeks of no classes, no teaching and learning. Our concerned as former students is that when two bulls are fighting it’s only the grass that suffers. Now students are the victims of this impasse and we are calling for your immediate intervention before this semester might be declared null and void. The Minister of Higher Education and Training and our government had not tried to make any endeavour to seek to resolve this crisis. The management today the 28th day of August is chasing students out of the 4 campuses (Mthatha, Butterworth, East London and Queenstown). We suspect that our government want to close down our University, please intervene. Your serious attendance to this matter and your immediate intervention will be highly appreciated. Yours Truly Zincedile Tiya
