This year, the conference bears as its theme: Empowering Youth through dialogue, training and advocacy, and is scheduled for December 9th, 10th and 11th from 8:30am – 3:00pm daily . The conference will target young persons aged 13-35 and will be held at La Vue Boutique Hotel in South Hill. This year’s national conference has 2 main components: A training and capacity building component for youth and youth leaders and a special segment dubbed ‘Straight up Conversations’. The training component will be facilitated by consultants of the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre, namely Ms. Dwynette Eversley and Ms. Heather Hale and will focus on training young people to be effective advocates, managers and positive leaders. The ‘Straight Up Conversations’ component will feature ‘straight to the point’ conversations between young people and policymakers, and the aim is to assess recommendations which have been presented to policymakers over the past 6 conferences (2007-2012). These recommendations will focus on the issues of Protection of Children and Substance Abuse, Youth, Unemployment and the Economic Crisis, Access to Education and Crime and Violence. Registration for the NCYD-2013 will commence on Monday 11th through Monday 25th November 2013. Agencies, organisations and young people (aged 13-35) are asked to register early as space is limited. The conference is free of charge to all; however conference attendees will be required to submit a short report at the end of the training. Certification will be given to those who attend the conference. Please contact the Department of Youth and Culture at 497-7999/ 497-0969 or email [email protected] or [email protected].
