Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” Movie: Movie: Movie: Maybe? Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 3-D, and the animations were visual stunners. Confession: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made me believe, at least for a few minutes any way, that intelligent apes could fight and win a war that subjugates humans. Even with the very predictable results of every human ape encounter well in mind the animations in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were so human-like that the Apes made me, have mixed feelings as I watched the end credits with the ape hero triumphant and regal as the ever apologetic human hero ominously fades into the murky San Francisco darkness to hide in the abandoned ruins of the Powell Street BART Station. Confession: I’ve never liked The Planet of the Apes. The original premise of this long running film series is that apes, who are of course inherently non-human and therefore inferior and unworthy in every way, have taken over everything primarily because of liberal policies and human folly, is a concept way, way too steeped in 1970’s right wing code for racial minorities taking over and other fear mongering sentiments to ever have much appeal for this member of one of those feared demographics. No matter how cute Roddy McDowell looked in a rubber chimp mask or how many monkey degrees his sweet girl friend held it could never make up for that stinging if applied only slightly incorrectly indictment from the same actor who warned us that unless we allowed unbridled corporate agro-biz it’s way we’d end up eating each other for dinner and he knew this because he was rich and played Moses and God. He also knew that minority groups and us poor could never be more to he and his ilk, than those damned dirty apes.
