Lent is a good time to reconnect and to belong to something. I have talked to many people over the last 10 years and many have stopped attending the church they grew up in. They may have become frustrated with the dogmatic discussions and the rules of a church or denomination or church stopped meaning anything to them--that they can develop their own spiritually on their own. The honest truth is that people’s sense of “belonging” is not particularly stable today. Realize though that belonging is an important part of whom we are as people--an important part of religion. Ask yourself today which family of faith do you belong? What community will you join? What is your religious tribe? Where is your spiritual home? These are all questions that a spiritual community can help you to build your role in the world, to where you fit, and for what role in society you might or should be. For belonging is ultimately a question of identity: Who am I?
