Day 5 of Jeanettes music challenge – Free – Alright Now. Sorry, I forgot to put this on yesterday! This is possibly the most personal of all the songs Im putting on during these 5 days. Free were my Dads favourite band, and this was his favourite song. I was 22 years old when he died… But I can consider myself lucky maybe. I got to spend more time with him than my brothers – Nick for example, was only 14 when he passed. He struggled with Non-hodgkinsons lymphoma for what felt like an eternity. Chemo put him in remission, then, as soon as the chemo stopped, the cancer returned… For me though, my dad, who loved walking, climbing and cycling, died the day he was diagnosed and given treatment. Chemo makes your defences weak – as soon as he couldnt do anything he loved doing, I think that gave him more pain than the stupid disease ever did. I miss him everyday. Anyway – Alright Now – one of the best riffs in music EVER, and the one song guaranteed to get me and my two brothers on the dance floor at a wedding, with smiles on our faces, throwing shapes in honour of our old man. This was really difficult to do – condensing it to 5 songs… I cant believe theres no Happy Mondays, Def Leppard, Doves, Snow Patrol or The Smiths to name but a few… I will nominate Ian Cameron, Sarah Burke, Olivia Myson and renowned music snobs David Burke and Nick Burke (who almost certainly wont bother).
