Day Eight: Left this morning at 10:45 for Bath. Got there in time to take the Bath Iron Works trolley tour. The tour started out with an excellent 25 minute movie and a very informative trolley tour. Bath Iron Works is shipyard located on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. BIW has built private, commercial and military vessels, most of which have been ordered by the United States Navy. The shipyard has built and sometimes designed battleships, frigates, cruisers and destroyers, including the Arleigh Burke class, which are currently among the worlds most advanced surface warships. It was interesting to see how they build the large ships in sections and then weld the sections together. Everything is very computerized. Once a Navy ship is completed the Navy and General Electric take two weeks to test all the systems. We were not allowed to take pictures in BIW for security reasons. We then visited the Maritime Museum, I wont bore you with that. On the way back we stopped to see the historic Androscoggin swinging walking bridge just south of Brunswick. The bridge was designed and built by Roeblings Sons Co. for mill workers to cross the river from new housing in Topsham to the Cabot Mill in Brunswick.
