In order to engage students in dynamic conversations about the shared ecosystem of the countries of the Nile Basin, we will present a collaborative musical concert featuring musicians from diverse regions of the Nile Basin, including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt. The concert will be followed by a workshop and round table discussions dedicated to empowering the youth to find innovative solutions for some of the pressing issues surrounding resource management and sustainability in the Nile Basin. Please join us this Wednesday from 3pm - 6pm at the Wangari Maathai Institute, Upper Kabete Campus, University of Nairobi. 22 February, 1999 is a memorable day when the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) was conceived by the Council of Ministers in charge of Water Affairs of the Nile Basin countries of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Nile day is a very special anniversary particularly for the River Nile Basin countries who made a decision to work “All Together for Better Cooperation” twelve years ago. During the 2012 Session of the General Assembly of the African Union, the Assembly decided to recognize Prof Wangari Maathai’s numerous achievements in her capacity as the first Presiding Officer of the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU –ECOSOCC), African Union Peace Ambassador, Founder of the Green Belt Movement, Goodwill Ambassador to the Congo Basin Forest Initiative, UN Peace Messenger for Environment and Climate, and UNEP Champion of the Earth. In so doing they designated 3 March as Wangari Maathai Day to be observed in conjunction with Africa Environment Day, each year beginning in 2012.
