The election will be open for the next 10 days (closing on April 3rd). We have one candidate running: Laura Isabel Serna. Her statement is below. Laura Isabel Serna is assistant professor in the Division of Critical Studies at the School of Cinematic Arts at USC. She is the author of Making Cinelandia: American Films and Mexican Film Culture before the Golden Age (Duke University Press, 2014), a cultural history of the encounter between Mexican audiences and films produced in the US in the 1920s. She is currently working on two new projects one which takes up the production of race on screen during the silent period by looking at pre-production practices such as location shooting, costume design, and make-up. She is also investigating the distribution of both American and European films in El Gran Caribe in the teens. As her website tagline reads she is dedicated to recovering silent cinema history in Latin and Latina/o America. Other current interests include the career of Danny Trejo and extra casting and authenticity. She has been a member of the Latino Caucus since 2005 (she thinks) and would be honored to help the caucus publicize the work of its members and organize to give scholarship on Latino film and media, broadly construed, a higher profile within SCMS.
