Dear Diary: Month end, quarter end and year end. If you are an accountant, these are meaningful phrases. Especially year end because it means you have to prepare for the year end audit. As part of the year end audit, the auditors will report findings back to company management. But you know what doesnt happen in the business world? Business leaders dont wait for auditors to point out issues and tell them what to fix. Nope. Business leaders know their operations and they constantly identify problems and weaknesses and address them. If not, they dont last in business. They dont need an auditor to tell them where they are going wrong. Sadly, apparently, government operates quite differently. It is concerning that Ministers seem to not really understand their departments enough to identify major problems and instead rely on periodic audits to tell them where these problems are. But wait, theres more. Once the auditors communicate the problems, the Ministers might or might not take accountability and responsibility for addressing the issues. This is pretty hard for me to get my head around and you too should be appalled by it. This morning I went on the Rick Howe Show to discuss a report issued yesterday by the Auditor General. If you are bored, have a listen.
