Dear FB Community, I have felt unable to post during the recent insanity. I was fearful that anything I posted would perhaps make me seem even more unhinged than the people creating this situation. I am not by any means an uncritical Democrat. I have been unhappy with many things about the party for years going back to Clinton. However, even growing up in Mississippi in the 1950s and early 1960s with the old Dixiecrats did not equal what we have just seen. Some of the people serving us in elected office seem not just to have views different from mine but seem to be truly mentally unbalanced and downright mean. I, of course, did not vote for him but I have been impressed with the way that Sen. McCain and a few other Republicans have banded together in the last few days and spoken up for sanity and indicated that they have some respect for the idea of majority rule. I find Ted Cruz to be a really disturbing personality. It is not just his viewpoints but his very persona that I feel is truly unsettling. This is of course far from over and I dont think the country can keep going this kind of totally unneeded crisis without great long term costs at home and abroad. My friend in Ireland tells me we are truly alarming to them as a country now. I have people on my feed who are Republican (no Tea Party types), die hard Democrats, people who are Democrats because they arent sure what else to do, Socialists, Progressives of all strips, Libertarians, even a few anarchists but I do not think I could sit in a room with a Tea party person and guarantee their safety. I find this distressing. It makes me feel that I am not a very evolved human being after 40 years of being on some sort of spiritual journey. Some great spiritual teachers would say that I should be able to hold Ted and company in the light and pray for their well being. Not quite there yet. I have been trying to save my sanity by going to the pool, concentrating on sermon preparation, planning for my upcoming class and going to a Kirtan Chanting group. As always I am watching too much Cable news and going to way too many movies. I liked one called Don Jon which was written, directed and starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is my favorite young actor. It is sort of about learning how not to objectify the people and other situations in our lives. I have also just finished And the Mountains Echoed by the gentleman who wrote The Kit Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I highly recommend all three. I am praying and hoping that we might be able to get back to working on the many enormous issues we face as a country and as planetary citizens. I am despite being a cynic also an optimist by temperament.
