Dear ME(m)Bers! I am a former PhD student of Jonas Ludvigsson. I am affiliated to MEB since January, although you probably don’t know me yet (since I live in Värmland, Swedens most beautiful county, situated in between Sthlm and Oslo). Below is a highly selective report from the World Congress of Epidemiology in Anchorage, Alaska. Naturally the few MEB people attending introduced some very interesting abstracts :-): Stephanie Bonn showed that both being obese at diagnosis and gaining weight after diagnosis was associated with an increased rate of prostate cancer-specific mortality. I presented the Review of 103 Swedish Qregs, that you have all already profited greatly from during last week (pannacotta-fika-celebration) :-). Also some people outside of MEB made interesting research.. ;-) The by far most encouraging poster was one from the UK. They had looked at over 1,000,000 women’s reports on different kind of activities and association to vascular disease. Conclusion? More than 10 hour of homework per week is clearly too much, and that strenuous exercise >3 times a weeks is not additionally beneficial for vascular risk. However I am sure that this hold only for women J. We also heard a great talk on epigenetic epidemiology although the slide shows that there are several caveats to it, but also possibilities of improving causality with for e.g. with Mendelian randomization and instrumental variable approaches. From the global health perspective several speakers emphasized on the importance of diversifying the view from averages (put into focus within the millennium goals) to e.g. quintiles or even decentiles to be able to improve on life-quality for the poorest individuals in a population. Nancy Kreiger, Miguel Hernan and Jan P Vanderbroke performed an interesting plenary on different views upon causation. The conference in Anchorage also offered possibilities of getting really close to some Alaskan wild birds (eagles and owls) as well as Alaskan music. All in all a very pleasant experience! Plan ahead for participation in the next ICE WCE conference in Japan 20-22 Aug 2017. Best, Louise
