Dear all, I have introduced a couple of friends to Mr James work in the last few months and on both occasions I recommended they start with The Ash Tree (possibly because that was the first story I heard, read by Michael Horden). So, my question: which story by the Master would you recommend (or have recommended) to someone if asked, and why? My own recommendation is based not just on my own first taste of Montagues work but also because it is particularly satisfying in its conclusion, plus the dialogue strikes the reader as in keeping with the time the story is set. So, over to my fellow Jamesians.
