Dear all, today I found out a very important fact that concerns - TopicsExpress

Dear all, today I found out a very important fact that concerns all of us. On the 9th of April, at noon, in Convocation Hall is scheduled the General Academic Assembly (GAA), where important academic decisions are going to be made. The University Act, namely the law, REQUIRES that the voting body of the GAA includes at least 35 elected student members. I phoned the University Secretarys office today to inquire for the names of the Graduate Student voting members of the GAA. I was told that there have never been students on the GAA and that this has never been an issue. In addition I was told that the USSU had already inquired about this issue and was told that there will be no student members at the GAA this year. It turns out that the since the University Act does not indicate the proportion of graduate and undergraduate students to be elected for the GAA, the administration didnt know how to settle the matter and ended up not respecting the University Act and simply not giving students a voice. I was sad to learn that the previous GSA Executives had not pointed out this issue in previous years and the issue remains to be resolved, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the University Administration to make sure the USSU and GSA are aware of the need to elect their GAA members. I call upon all of you to join me at the General Academic Assembly where we must hold the administration accountable. We are paying a lot of money to study at this University, the academic decisions that are being made affect all of us one or another, and we must demand that our input be taken seriously. We have been silent long enough! No more!
