Dear sociology teacher who has three of my students for an hour before they come to me, Please do not get my students all wound up over the Washington Team debate, give them what you call just the facts, tell them to make their own decision, and then send them on their way-- please give them some context and unpack the debate so they can better understand the issue or dont bring it up. Some thoughts. 1. When you fail to reenforce that native people have a legitimate claim against being dehumanized by things like the Washington team name and to explain what it means to have to live with the consequences of that dehumanization you fail to give student the context they need to make a decision 2. When you fail to express your position in a debate and reasons for it youre acting like a coward. Step up and be honest about it. These are not case studies real people are involved. 3. When you let the small handful of students of color get backed into playing defense for team not-white you fail as a teacher. Sincerely, annoyed B
