Decades ago, even fictional Cuban expat gangsters played by Italian American actors staked out principled positions against Fidel Castro’s regime. As Al Pacino put it in “Scarface” in 1983: “I kill a communist for fun.” But even before President Obama opened America’s arms to Cuba this week, this vehement anti-Castro, pro-embargo position was starting to show its age. Hostility to normal relations with the island nation is a fading doctrine among Cuban Americans in Florida. The younger they are, the less likely to support the continued isolation of Cuba. That was the conclusion of the latest annual survey of Cuban Americans taken in Miami-Dade County between February and May this year by the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University.
