December 23, 2014 1 Corinthians 4:1–2 (ESV) This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. Faithful Stewards Paul wants the church to determine whether those who are in leadership have been faithful stewards of the mysteries of God. He is not interested whether they are dynamic speakers who entertain from the pulpit, or great musicians who people love to listen to and tap their feet along with, or beautiful in appearance. Paul wants to be judged based on whether he is faithful and true to Gods Word. Pretty simple stuff. We are not the first generation of Christians to want traits in our pastors and other leaders other than those spelled out in Scripture. Pastors and Elders are to be men of character, faithful husbands and fathers, sober-minded, wise, able to teach, not prone to violence, not greedy, and peacemakers. We arent told our pastors should hold us in rapt suspense as they preach, or make us burst out in laughter. There are many requirements for leadership in Scripture but they have to do with inward character not outward appearance or flamboyant showmanship. If we have a pastor who is faithful to God and His Word, faithful to his wife and family, and faithful to us as a congregation, that is infinitely more important than any wow factor he may bring as a part of his ministry.
