Defeated UNC candidate in the St Joseph by-election Ian Alleyne said he “felt good” because “I can raise my head tonight, and the best endorsement I could have ever gotten in my life was beign placed in public domain for scanning…I can stand before you and say I am clean”. He said in ten days during the campaign, he was able to provide water. “What it would take an MP to do in five years, I took ten days. Don’t take God out of your thoughts and think I am a loser. I am not a loser”. He said the UNC was the best party in the world and that “I stand next to the best Prime Minister in the world. It ain’t over. I (took on) a party (the PNM) in ten days. In five more day, I would have been able to convert those 600 voters (the approximate margin of PNM victory). He congratulated Deyalsingh, but said “I coming back again and I am taking my 600-plus votes. He said ILP candidate Oma Lalla “should be ashamed of yourself. You see what you did? You have betrayed this nation by ensuring that the PNM took the election”. To Persad-Bissessar, he said “it was my honour to serve you. I not leaving with you. I staying with you. Ian Alleyne is a member of this government and party. I coming again. He said the 600 vote-win the PNM won by, was not a weakness of the UNC, but proof of the split vote. He said “I am going to stick with this party and we are going to come back. I Ian Alleyne will work with every single Member of Parliament, Come next election it will be wetting after wetting”. Persad-Bissessar thanked Alleyne for his candidacy, and said “For the fourth time in one year we are very proud as a government to conduct election free and fair”. She congratulated Deyalsingh but said he would only be there until the next election. “We live to fight another day” she said
