Defence Day observed across Pakistan to honour soldiers of 1965 war ISLAMABAD, Sept 6 (APP): Defence Day of Pakistan was observed on Friday with zeal and fervour across Pakistan with traditional ceremonies and rallies to pay homage to the ‘Shuhada’ and ‘Ghazis’ for rendering supreme sacrifices in defence of the motherland. Special prayers were offered for the solidarity, integrity and prosperity of the motherland at all mosques. Wreaths were laid and ‘Fateha’ was offered at the graves and Monuments of recipients of Nishan-e- Haider, the highest gallantry award. The messages from respective service chiefs were read out to the troops. Hilal-e-Istiqlal was hoisted at Lahore, Sargodha and Sialkot where citizens alongside Armed Forces braved enemy’s aggression with valiance and honour and caused enemy an ignominious defeat. People took out rallies in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Sargodha and Sialkot to pay tribute to the martyrs and ghazis. A peace rally was held in Peshawar in connection with Defence Day during which speakers paid tributes to the martyrs and Ghazis of 1965 Indo-Pak War. Participants of the rally, organized by Pasban NGO and members of the Civil Society at Hastnagri on GT Road, were holding photos of recipients of Nishan-i-Haider award. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani addressed a passing out parade of cadets in the Military College Sui (MCS) in Balochistan. The cadets of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Academy Risalpur mounted guard’s duty at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in a traditional ceremony in Karachi. Air Vice-Marshal Rashid Kamal, Air Officer Commanding PAF Academy Risalpur, inspected the guard of honour, laid a wreath and offered Fateha at the mausoleum. The ceremony also commemorated the visit of the Father of the Nation to PAF Academy Risalpur 66 years ago. The ceremony was keenly witnessed by common people including a large number of students from various schools and colleges. Pakistan Navy (PN) marked the day in a befitting manner. The day dawned with special prayers at all naval mosques forsolidarity and integrity of the country. ‘Quran Khwani’ was also held for eternal peace of ‘Shuhuda’. Wreath laying ceremonies were held at Shuhuda’s memorials at Pakistan Navy Dockyard. Commander Submarines laid a wreath and offered Fateha at the monument built in memory of martyrs of submarine Ghazi at PNS Abdoze. Managing Director PN Dockyard also laid a wreath and offered Fateha at the memorial built in commemoration of PN Dockyard workers who were martyred during 1971 Indo-Pak war. Commanding Officers of all units and establishments addressed special gatherings of officers and highlighted significance of the day. All the ships and establishments were decorated and illuminated in accordance with naval traditions. Pakistan Television and all private TV Channels broadcast special programmes to highlight the significance of the Day. Defence Day Show on the theme “Defending together as a Nation”, was telecast on Pakistan Television and also at all private TV Channels. Likewise the print media published special supplements on the occasion, carrying articles, features and stories of valour exhibited by our Armed Forces and the nation.
