Democracy and the People: Bhutan Before our eyes and in our conscious always lies the presence of our beloved and mighty Kings, whose noble actions has kept us together as a nation. Their visions and deeds along with our forefathers to carry out all commands with dedication and loyalty has given us a nation that we can all be proud of today. Lives sacrificed, untold history of valor and courage, history of hardship, of hard work, of loyalty and dedication beyond self-needs that was the order of the day then. When all around us, nations lost their independence, we maintained ours, a tiny Kingdom with a tiny population, we survived. We were united as one under the guidance and wisdom of our beloved Kings and united did our forefathers always stand, against all odds and against all hardships. Our forefathers were willing to sacrifice their own lives in the name of Justice, Peace and for Unity. They did stand as one united under our Kings, united in thoughts and actions always. Our forefathers lived in a precarious time, when resources were scarce, when no modern technology were at hand and when all odds were against them, they still had the wisdom and courage to survive as a nation, they had the wisdom and courage to leave a brighter path, a brighter future for us the younger generations, and what we see today is due to our Kings and forefathers wisdoms and courage. Yes, they had the heart, the wisdom, the courage and the will to work for a brighter future for us all today. Now as our country grows, we the people who have had success in so many ways, must recover our possessions over our mind and spirit and lay stronger foundations for our children, our children’s children. We must take refuge in wisdom and learning, and also refuge in the guidance and wisdom of our King. My fellow countrymen, we must realize in full the sense of a government that is by, of and for the people. We must choose and elect wisely for our destiny and that of our Tsa Wa Sum will lie our selection, our votes. We must all applaud and support hard work, loyalty, dedication, wisdom and good principles and shun the bad and the evil. You and those who read this have received a special advantage – education, and most of you have had the chance for enjoyment of life far greater than comes to the majority of our fellow citizens. To us much was given and much is expected of us and if we yield to wrongs and evils that we see today, our chance for useful service to our Tsa Wa Sum and for the future are but at an end. In the long run, success or failure will be defined by the way in which an average man, an average woman does his or her duty, first in the ordinary everyday affairs of life and next in their cries for Justice and equality. The average citizen must be a good citizen. The stream will never rise higher than its main source, and the main source of national power and national greatness is found in the average citizen of our Nation. Therefore we must do our best to see that the standards of our average citizens are kept high and the average cannot be kept high unless the standard of loyalty, dedication, service and principles of the government is much higher. There is no man or woman unworthy of respect, no man or woman that does not love or care for the Tsa Wa Sum and hence we must guide them to make responsible and informed decisions, yet we must not dictate our views but merely inform them of all issues and challenges that we face as a Nation and as the people. And if we do not but inform, we all are unfit to bear the blessings of our Kings, our Gods and Deities. There is a need of a sound body, and even more of a sound mind. But above mind and above body stands Character. The sum of which are a person’s force and courage, of good faith and a sense of honor, self restraint, self mastery, common sense, the power of accepting individual responsibility and yet of acting in conjunction with others, courage and resolution – these are the qualities which mark a masterful person. But ordinary everyday qualities include the will and the power to work and to fight at need. Now the main question arises. Is the right prevailing? Are the laws of righteousness being fulfilled? No, self-respecting individual and no self-respecting nation should ever submit to the wrong. The greatest of all curses for a nation is the curse that her people be idle, where wrongs prevails and justice and equality take a back seat. If we the people bring our heads down and bow to the curse then what our Kings and forefathers achieved will be an idle waste. And as such individually no refinement of life, no delicacy of taste, no material progress can in anyway compensate for the loss of the great fundamental virtues and values that were laid before us. Everyone needs a helping hand now and then, but if a person lies down, it is but a waste of time to try and carry him and it is a very bad thing for everyone if we make these people feel the same reward will come to them. We the people must not bow our heads to such curse; we must not lie down and give up all hope. Nations were built on hopes, dreams and actions, we must act wisely and lay a stronger foundation for democracy, for us the people and for our Tsa Wa Sum exactly like the one envisioned by our King. Beware a man’s efficiency if not guided and regulated by a moral sense, then the more efficient he is the worse he is, the more dangerous to our Tsa Wa Sum. Courage, intellect, all the masterful qualities serve but to make a man more evil if they are merely used for the man’s own advancement and own self gains with brutal indifference to the right of others. It further speaks ill of people that support such qualities and who treats their possessors as heroes regardless of whether the qualities are used wrongly. It makes no difference as to the precise way in which this sinister efficiency is shown. It makes no difference whether such a man’s force and ability betray themselves in a career of moneymaking. If the man works for evil, then the more successful he is, the more he should be despised and condemned by all upright and far seeing people. Further more if we the people fail to understand such men for their evils against society and out country and admire such, then we prove ourselves unfit and unworthy for liberty and equality. We the people should strive to shackle or destroy that individualism which triumphs by greed and cunning, which exploits the weak by craft and brutality. We the people have to go with any man or party that will bring about Justice and equality of opportunity, who will also turn the tool user more and more into tool owners. All of us the people are equal in certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. But we should not say that men are equal where they are not equal nor proceed upon the assumption that there is equality where it doesn’t exist. But we should strive to bring about a measurable equality at least to the extent of preventing the inequality that is due to force and fraud. My countrymen, now at the time of elections, I ask you all not to say that because an issue doesnot affect you individually, I don’t care. If you do say such, you are basically saying that you love not and care not for our country and our future as a nation.
