Despite mass surveillance of Canadians an attack occurred in Ottawa. Prime Minister Stephen Harper promises even more invasive laws in order to protect the Canadian people. While the sentiment appears to be well placed the tactics being proposed by the Harper Government, and supported by the politically ambitious opposition parties, is one where Canadian Laws will be made to imitate American laws post-9/11. Will this stop future attacks? No. Nothing can stop future attacks other than understanding what drove these Men to commit violent acts of the sort and questioning Canadas role in their grievances. Not with the goal of justifying their actions, as nothing can justify their actions, but rather to understand the causal links between Canadian foreign policy and the security risks we take back home as a consequence. Rather than pausing and waiting for more information to come in, the Canadian Government has jumped on the opportunity to implement draconian laws they would have otherwise never been able to pass through the house of commons. Laws which have not helped in the USA, as the Boston Marathon bombing recently showed. Sad sad to see fear take the place of reason in my homeland. RLR
