Detroit Red Wings - San Jose Sharks 22 Oct 2013, 01:30 Detroit is coming home after an unpleasant defeat at Phoenix, where the didnt show enough will and motivation to win over tired Coyotes Red Wings have after a few unconvincing performances started to play and they won several games in a row, but when it was expected to win over Phoenix, who the previous day played a tough exhausting match with the Ducks, the Detroit team underperformed. After teh first third they were leading 2:0, but that was all from them. They allowed 5 goals and suffered an unpleasant defeat. It was simply like they tried to guard the result, they played so weakly in attacking, and there defense was leaky. And in hockey when you try to guard the result, it always turns out to be the wrong tactics. Howard was at the goal, which might have been a bad choice by the coach, since Gustafsson would definitely do a better job. They had two powerplay chances that they did not use, and all five goals they allowed with the same number of players on the ice, which is worrying. The last goal was scored by the Phoenix goalie in the last second of the game, shooting the puck from his goal. - They played last night, we didnt, and tehy went into the game tougher and better. We were not good enough, we didnt play tough like we know how to, and we did not have enough hot players - said coach Mike Babcock. Its really incredible how Detroit can play below any expectations, but also above any. They have to hold on to a constant and be in the game, for with such oscillations they will ahve plenty of problems and there will be dissatisfaction in the team. They have an abundance of not just stars, but real players capable of great successes. Today they will not have an easy task against Sharks, who are a much better team than Phoenix, but it remains to be seen at which level they will play this game. The only injured ones are Kronwall and Eaves, but they wont be missed much. The Sharks are playing fantastic. The yopened the season in the best possible manner, and if it wasnt for the relaxing in Dallas and a defeat in regulation, they would have the perfect record that they deserved. The latest victim was the Calgary team that was trounced 6:3. They completely outplayed them, had almost 40 shots at goal, excellent special situations, powerplay 3/9 and penalty killing 5/6 which shows theyre equally mighty in offense and defense. Burns, Hannan, Marleau, Coulture and Pavelski twice were the scorers, so we can say that there is danger for the Wings tonight from all sides. - It was huge tonight getting three on the PP. That was huge. especially in the third when they got those two quick goals on us, to come back and respond and get that fifth goal was huge - the Sharks captain Joe Thornton said. Tonight they will surely enter the game strongly, for Detroit is a great team and they will wont to prove they can defeat them too, not just the weaker teams like Calgary. Their record says that those always were tough games with a small number of goals, last five finished under, and of those five three were finished out of regulation. But that was in previous seasons and shouldnt be taken for granted, for both teams are playing more offensively this season, so we can expect an exciting game. They beat Vancouver 4-3 through penalty shootouts, which was their seventh win of the eight games played this season. Everything going as planned for the Pens so far. The Canucks game was pretty much even, but the Canucks did better shooting. They even held the lead on two occasions, first at 1-0 and then at 3-2, but the Pens knew how to catch up with them. The Penguins did OK on powerplays in that game, scoring in one of their four chances, while they managed to defend once from a penalty killing. Thanks to their good realization they managed to reach the penalty shootouts, where only Malkin was accurate enough. -I think as a group, were finding ways to win. Today wasnt our best game, but Fleury shut the door when we needed him to and we found some ways to get back in the game and get a great goal from Malkin in the shootout. We still want to get better- said the Pens best player Sidney Crosby, who had a goal and two assists in that game. Regarding absences among the Penguins, the situation is the same, offensive players Matt DAgostini, James Neal and Beau Bennet are still injured, as well as defender Kris Letang. The great Colorado are rolling over everyone in their path. The reconstructed and reborn team owned by the Kroenke family have still not lost the momentum of their furious season opening and continue to impress in NHL Western. The Avs are currently the second team in the Western conference with only a point less than the leading Sharks, and have won seven of their eight games. The last one was a win as well, with the Avs outplaying the Sabres in Buffalo 4-2 in a very deserved victory. That was proof that their excellent start of the season with a 6-0 record did not happen by accident. After losing to Detroit in the big derby, the triumph in Buffalo shut the mouth of critics who cannot stop lamenting on how the Avalanche are about to fall and break apart. However, Patrick Roys team have so far been incredibly steady and constant. - We were talking in here. This team doesnt lose two in a row. Thats the attitude we want to have- said Matt Duchene after the Buffalo duel, in which the rest of the Avs, who did not display brilliance so far, started to really play. This led to another big star of the team scoring, apart from Duchene and young captain Landeski, as Paul Stastny got a goal for the first time this season, with Ryan OReilly, another quality attacker for the Avs, adding another one. In Denver are still waiting for OReilly to start functioning properly. - I think we just look around, and we know what weve got: Weve got four lines that can compete with anyone, two good power-play units. I think everyone is kind of pushing each other. We want everyone to do well, but we know that on any given night and one line doesnt show up, the other lines show up, were giving ourselves a chance to win. I think in goaltending, were the same thing, where two guys both eager to win, pushing each other and both kind of feeding off each other. I think that all starts from the top down- said Paul Stastny, describing his team. Before an extremely difficult away derby in Pittsburgh vs Sidney Crosby, Colorado are doing great. The atmosphere, motivation and confidence of the team are at a level unheard of probably since Joe Sakic, and there are no important players missing either. They won two consecutive matches and their form is clearly improving. Calgary are troubled with injuries and they tend to underperform on the away matches. LA Kings started the season slowly but they are looking better with every round. After the away win against Nashville, they have also won at home against Dallas. They won convincingly but, perhaps even more important, they really looked good on the ice that day. That was their 6th victory in the opening 9 rounds, and they lost only once at home at the very beginning of the season. Their defense is looking really good, goalie Quick is getting better and better, and the offense creates lots of goal scoring opportunities. Although Dallas took the lead, Williams turned the game around with two goals. The away team scored the equalizer after that, but in the third period LA scored three goals and they won the match. They had 5 shots on goal more than their opponents, and excellent penalty killing (7/7) was probably the key for the victory that day. Quick also helped a lot with 93% shots on his goal saved so it would be fair to say solid defensive work earned them the victory that day. Of course, when your defense performs good it is easier to play in the attack, and their offensive line ups did their job that day. - What we need to do is to create our identity on the ice. That is something you need to do every season. If you are entering the third period one goal behind, you must feel like you are going to win that game. I felt that kind of energy in the locker room during the half time break. You could sense the players are focused and eager to win - Kings forward Justin Williams said. The Kings are injury-free and that is excellent news for them. Especially as Calgary arent really that lucky in that area. Calgary lost two consecutive away games and they are slowing down after a great start of the season. They are still building their team, they have no big names in the roster and it would be fair to say they are the main favorites for the last place on the table. Although it didnt look like that couple of weeks ago as they have really looked good at the beginning of the season. After the loss to Anaheim, they lost convincingly to San Jose. Their players made 10 penalties and that was the main reason for the loss that day. Three times they conceded with one man less on the ice, and, on the other side, they only scored once from the 7 powerplays of their own. They were 4-1 down by the end of the second period, but then Hudler and Backlund scored two goals it looked like their are back in the game. But, their defense once again started to make mistakes. They conceded two more goals in the third period and the game was over. Unlike the last season, they tend to underperform on the away matches this year. They conceded a total of 16 goals on the 4 away matches and their defense is not looking good in general. They conceded 26 goals in just 7 games. They also had a terrible penalty killing percentage (69%) and it is no wonder they are not winning points. - We werent focused. And when you are not focused there is no chance you can win. Especially against such a tough opponent - Calgarys head-coach Bob Hurtley said. Calgary are having some injury problems, especially in the offense. Cammalleri, Stajan and Jones are all out, and they are much more dangerous with them on the ice. This could prove to be a huge handicap for them against a very tough opponent such as LA Giants.
