Devotional for March 15 2014 “Are You Kidding Me?” For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16 On the last Sunday of February, a lot of NASCAR fans were very excited as Dale Earnhardt, Jr., won the Daytona 500 after a long drought from the winner’s circle. The fact that Dale, Jr., won was not a huge surprise though it had been a long time since he had been on Victory Lane. However, four years ago, the Daytona 500 NASCAR race was won by an unlikely (and basically unknown) person in only his second start in a NASCAR race. He had celebrated his 20th birthday on the day before the race. The young man from Knoxville, Tennessee, crossed the finish line ahead of everyone else in a wreck-filled race. And the first words from him that were broadcast shortly after he finished the race were, “Are you kidding me?” He repeated that phrase several times. Trevor Bane could not believe that he had won the Daytona 500. He was at a loss for words that something so great had happened so early in his racing career. One day he is a teenager, the next day he is the winner of what many consider the greatest race in NASCAR. And his first words were, “Are you kidding me?” When we think about the fact that all of us are sinners, that we have all fallen wayyyyyy short of what God expects of us, we could easily think that it is hopeless for God to ever accept us. However, when we consider what God did for us even while we were sinners, we should stand in awe. We should be speechless. If we could say anything, we should quote Trevor Bane. “Are you kidding me?” He was amazed that he had won. It should amaze us that God would still love us because we are all sinners. We should be in awe that he would allow His Son, Jesus, to come into the world, and die on the cross for our sins. While I know that God really does love me in spite of who I am and what I do or don’t do, I still at times have to pinch myself, and say “Are you kidding me?” It is hard to believe that God really loves me and you that much. But he does. Just like Trevor Bane will always be the 2011 Daytona 500 winner, God will always love us and Jesus’ death on the cross will always provide a way to God for those who will believe and accept that gift. Lord, I am thankful that you are not kidding me, but that you were dead serious in showing your love and providing a way to salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ. AMEN.
