Devotional for November 10th Is it true that you are what you eat? Today we cover the next section of 1 Corinthians chapter 8. 7 But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. Remember we are talking in this section about the gray areas of Christianity. For the Corinthians, Paul uses food offered to idols. Paul makes a profound statement in verse 8. Food does not bring us near to God. Our diet, what we eat, does not bring us closer to God. For the Corinthians, if they ate food offered to an idol or they didn’t eat food offered to an idol, their relationship with God was the same. For us today, we can participate in a gray area, or we can abstain. This in and of itself does not draw us closer to God. Just because you eliminate problem areas in your life, it does not mean that you are closer to God. Being close to God means making the decision to take the time to spend time with God in His Word and prayer. I have never been changed by fasting. I can avoid food and not be any closer to God. Bur, my prayer life has brought me closer to God. So, clearing gray areas out of our life is just the first step. It then clears room in our life for us to be intentional about spending time with the Lord. That is the most important thing. Whatever gets in the way of your time with God needs to go. It needs to be discarded. What areas of your life do you have that need to go? Hope you have a great Sunday.
