Dia de los Muertos is my new favorite thing, for two reasons. First, as a society we are taught to mourn quickly and then move on with life and continue on our own happy trajectories. Life goes on, so you should focus on the positive. But why should we suppress or slowly lose sight of people we loved and lost? Having a day set aside where you celebrate the lives of those you love who have passed is a beautiful thing. It’s done in such a celebratory way, too, instead of the doom and gloom that I’ve always felt attached to passing in our culture. It was a beautiful day of remembrance. Second, it also brought to light that I think that as a culture we don’t talk about death enough... what happens, how to handle it. Even though it’s a universal truth that has or will affect every one of us. I think talking about it will help us to grapple with the death of loved ones and our own eventual passing. Like incremental inoculations making us better able to handle and prepare for one of life’s most difficult truths. Oh and third, for obvious reasons... the face paint, beautiful vibrant colors, and costumes. Just an all around really cool experience.
