Did the Air Force Marathon - Official Page as my last long - TopicsExpress

Did the Air Force Marathon - Official Page as my last long training run for the Ironman World Championship and I can honestly say I actually ENJOYED doing it. How much fun it was to go out at a steady pace, not obsess about finishing times, and just run for fun!! Also, it was fun to witness the carnage of the 3:15 pace group between 19 and 20 miles. It literally went from like 20 people to three within one mile! I just sat off the back of the group and studied everyone...it was fascinating! I was mentally making bets on who was going to detonate in the first 20 miles. The answer: EVERYONE! The pacer finished ALONE. I started behind the group, let them string it out in the middle, worked from 12-20 miles to catch the group, and then just cruised in for a 3:14 finish. The lesson here is familiar but with a twist: IMPROPER Pacing makes for Piss Poor Performance! I finished without an issue, on goal time, with a smile on my face. Going out too hard in the marathon is DEADLY and generally not worth it. I will remember what I saw at this race while running at Kona and especially at The Boston Marathon!!! The race itself was top notch, and the finish (at the National Museum of the Air Force) was spectacular...the museum was fantastic as well! I raced for PACAF as part of the MAJCOM challenge. Our team won the event by over 5 mins!!! Great race for anyone looking for a well run, fast, classy event. Highly recommended.
