Did you get socked with a > 71% real property tax bill because of the new Residential A classification? If you had qualified for the homeowner exemption as of 10/1/13 and will continue to qualify for one through 9/30/15, then you may file for a tax compromise, which will allow the taxes to be reduced to the regular homeowner rate of $3.50/$1,000. I had opposed the creation of this new classification and the 71% rate increase every step of the way. It penalizes families who are trying to save their homes for their children and is yet another failed attempt to tax speculators. Please note that if you did not qualify for the homeowners exemption because you have not yet given title to your children, if you transfer a fractional ownership in the home to a family member and that member lives in the home, it would qualify for the exemption. (You would need to file the required paperwork by 9/30/14 for it to be in effect next fiscal year.) The Diamond Head Neighborhood Board will be discussing real property taxes at its meeting this evening at the Ala Wai Clubhouse. I will be there and will be working with some of the residents on other possible solutions. The form to file for the compromise is available at: realpropertyhonolulu/
