Did you know? False advertising . . . The Los Angeles Times ran ads for the July 12, 1975 Conejo USA Festival contest in Anaheim, CA, with the eye-catching See the four best corps in the world! Fans couldnt argue with three of the corps on the billing, as the Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Devils and 27th Lancers really were in the top four in the world. However, the fourth corps was the Imperial Dragons. The who? Well, the Los Angeles Chinese Imperial Dragons were always a colorful and unique corps, but to say they were a top-four was a slight overstatement. It seems because they won the California VFW state title the newspaper assumed they belonged in such fast company. The reality was that the Imperial Dragons ended up 41 points behind the first-place Santa Clara Vanguard. (By Brian Tolzmann, DCW staff)
