Did you know? Karatchi, Mahgreb (North Africa) Karatchi is a fast 2/4 BELLYDANCE rhythm that has the Teks and Dums in Ayuub transposed with the DUM less accented than accented Teks. Karim Nagi identifies it as coming from the Mahgreb, the North of Africa. He also identifies it with the Moroccan Gnawa rhythm Haddari and points out that it is also a fundamental rhythm in Algerian Rai music. Hossam Ramzy: From the word Karatchi you can tell that the next rhythm is not Egyptian. Its also very unusual because it starts with a TAK, which is the treble beat rather than the DOM, which is the bass beat. However it is widely used in Egyptian music and North African music. Per Greg Hunter/Dubsahara, Karatchi is a fast 2/4 from Pakistan . . . This is the same pattern as malfuf, with an offset on the downbeat. Karatchi can be combined with malfuf by two percussionists for a masbout mix. -Excerpt from The Encyclopedia of World Rhythms by Martin Wolf Murphy.
