Did you know? There is a newly-opened Reading Room in the Grey - TopicsExpress

Did you know? There is a newly-opened Reading Room in the Grey Nuns Building at Guy and Rene-Levesque. It provides students with a quiet place to study for a mid-term exam, review notes for an upcoming class or work on a research paper. This week, I decided to visit the building myself, to see first-hand what services were available. I was more than pleasantly surprised – I was blown away! The Reading Room officially opened on September 2 and is located in the former Chapel of the Invention of the Holy Cross. The altar has been removed but everything else is in place and the required updates were done in such a way as to respect the existing structure. It’s a very large room, with a ceiling that is likely 20 feet high, if not more, and huge windows that let in a lot of natural light. There are comfortable chairs to accommodate 192 students at study tables that feature quality lighting and are designed to support individual work. In addition, there are also smaller reading and group study rooms that are located off the hallway leading to the main Reading Room. Students looking for a place to work on a team project can take advantage of one of these study rooms, which are equipped with screens with connectors for laptops and large white boards. All of these rooms are now part of Concordia’s Libraries. Here are some things you need to know about the new Grey Nuns library spaces: 1. No talking or whispering is allowed in the new Reading Room. Make sure your electronic devices are on “silent” mode. 2. Use the entrance at 1190 Guy St. You will need your Concordia student ID card to access the Grey Nuns Building via the turnstiles at the top of the stairs. 3. You can book a group study room in advance through the Libraries’ new online booking system. 4. The Reading Room and group study rooms are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, and until 6 p.m. on Fridays. On Saturdays and Sundays, the hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5. You can eat your lunch or snack in a lunch room (B-105). You can drink in the Reading Room, small reading rooms and group study rooms, but you need to use a spill-proof mug or container. 6. A library support staff or student librarian is available on site if you need help or have any questions. 7. All rooms have Wi-Fi, so accessing the Internet is not a problem. I strongly encourage you to check out this amazing study space.
