Did you know . . .? The first man buried in the Twin City Cemetery was Jeremiah Thaddeus Coleman. He was born in Emanuel County May 12, 1833 and died in Emanuel County 76 years later on August 10, 1909. Jerry was a farmer before and after the Civil War as well as a store owner with Pete Rountree. In answer to the Confederate call to arms, Jerry enlisted in Co. B, 2nd Battalion, Cavalry on September 18, 1862 at Camp Rose, GA. When he returned after the war, he started from scratch. The store had been lost, he and Pete owed money to Charleston SC merchants, and his horse died. He, with his partner Pete, worked out a settlement with the merchants for their debts. Jerry bought a pony from John Overstreet, made ten bales of cotton, then used the proceeds to pay on a farm. He and his wife, Zilpha Durden Rountree, called their place “The Sycamores.” According to the 1870 Emanuel County Census, living with Jeremiah and Zilpha were Lawson Drew, 17, and Rachel Warnock, also 17. Both were black farm laborers. Jerry owned the land that was subdivided as Graymont and gave four acres of land for a cemetery which was first called Coleman Cemetery, now called Twin City Cemetery.
