Dinner with the Producer of “The Wolf of Wall - TopicsExpress

Dinner with the Producer of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Martin Scorsese once said, “And as Ive gotten older, Ive had more of a tendency to look for people who live by kindness, tolerance, compassion, a gentler way of looking at things.” If I could have dinner with the famous producer, I would ask him why he then made a movie that contained 506 f-words and 60 instances of blasphemy? I’m sure he would answer that he was just portraying Wall Street as it is. I was told similar things in peaceful New Zealand 40 years ago, when they began showing violent American movies and television programs. They said that they were just reflecting society as it was. But they weren’t. They were reflecting AMERICAN society as it was, and nowadays my peaceful home country has been transformed into a horribly violent and murderous country. Just like America. Over dinner, I would ask Mr. Scorsese if he knew why companies hand over millions of dollars for one 30-second advertisement during the Super bowl. It’s because it yields a high return. Advertisers tell us what we should wear, what we should like, how we should look, what to drink, what to eat, what to drive, how to wear our hair, what’s cool and what’s not, and millions like dumb sheep follow the lead. Add a blaspheming Leonardo DiCaprio to the mix and it lifts up a notch, because we tend to imitate what we admire. And so we have a generation who are habitual in their blasphemy. Did you see “Avatar”? Millions did. It was the biggest grossing movie of all time. If you did see it in a theater, did you notice that God’s Name was used in blasphemy 13 times? If you didn’t notice, it may be because you are desensitized to God’s Name being used in vain. According to CNN, September 30th is the official “National Blasphemy Day.” Not that we need one. New York has nine popular “OMG” stores. There is a TV program called “OMG!” USA Network once boasted of programs “Guaranteed to break more Commandments than any other lineup.” You can buy “OH MY G-D!” shoes, eat “OMG” candy, or read “OMG!” magazine--that purports to make its readers exclaim “Oh My God!” We seem to have forgotten the warning “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” If I had dinner with Mr. Scorsese, I would talk to him about that and other Commandments. I would then share the gospel with the “kindness, tolerance,” and “compassion” of which he spoke. Then I would pay for dinner, thank him for listening, hoping that he partakes in God’s mercy before the Day of Judgment. - Ray Comfort
