Disentangling the neural mechanisms involved in Hinduism- and Buddhism-related meditations reddit/r/science/comments/29m34x/disentangling_the_neural_mechanisms_involved_in/ Download full text . As usual, Tomasino et alia get things wrong from a TM perspective: According to Patañjali, Yoga enables the ‘‘suppression of the fluctuations and modifications of the mind’’ (Yoga-sutra 1,2) (Taimni, 1961). . We prefer cessation instead of suppression as that is a neutral term that doesnt imply control, intent, concentration, force, effort, etc. . Such a goal can be reached through: (i) voluntary inhibition of sensory activities (pratyahara), preceded by specific muscular postures (asana) and breathing regulation (pranayama); (ii) focusing on a particular object (e.g., the navel or the heart), with the aim of suppressing mind wandering (dharana) and (iii) switching from concentration on a single object of consciousness to complete absorption in meditation (dhyana), a condition leading to an ineffable state of nothingness accompanied by a loss of sense of self and duality (samadhi) (Feuerstein, 1996; Nash & Newberg, 2013). . From the TM perspective, none of the above lead to real samadhi, which can only be attained by allowing the mind to wander effortlessly as it will until it settles down of its own accord (if it does). Very little research on fMRI and TM exists, but it doesnt appear to be similar to any of the research findings cited above. Based on previous studies, even if sufficient TM fMRI/SPECT/etc results were available, Tomasino & company would lump the findings of TM in with all other Hindu practices, thereby clouding any differences that might exist. They create arbitrary categories, and then analyze everything after first sorting the practices into the small number of categories, rather than doing the analysis first, and sorting practices in terms of the results of the analysis. Even in terms of Buddhism vs Hinduism, this is obviously silly, as some forms of Buddhism resemble what they characterize as Hinduism while some forms of Hinduism resemble what they characterize as Buddhism, so the division they used is artificial.
