Do any of you know what is meant by the concept of "color" when applied to a piano performance? I am always trying to raise the level of my performance to make it more expressive and musical, and in the past I have received feedback saying that they would like more "Color" in a piece, but it has not been clear what this means. Do any of you, professional concert pianists, piano teachers, amateur pianists etc, have any ideas on this? Does it mean dynamic shaping of a melodic line, the voicing of the melody against the accompaniment (relative levels of the melody notes, bass line and inner parts), playing a similar phrase differently the second time, or all of the above? Sometimes, the analogy between music and other branches of the arts is rather abstract and difficult to explain, but since I have been an engineer and scientist, I like to have things explained in a very clear cut way that I can understand. Any comments will be greatly appreciated!
