Do we really need the position of Prime Minister? Its not an - TopicsExpress

Do we really need the position of Prime Minister? Its not an office recognised or authorised by the Constitution, and I think its becoming more and more an end unto itself rather than a recognition of first among equals that Parliament should bestow on the person nominated to deal with the executive on its behalf. What does the role do anyway? Policy is decided by caucuses. MPs are organised by party whips. The Speaker deals with the Manage of Government Business. The individual ministers deal with their portfolios. All I can determine is that the Prime Ministership endows the government of the day with a focal point, a personal face to put on the front of the decisions. Surely we are mature enough to not need a Daddy figure to either run to or rail against?
