Do you know the history behind the Rock Chalk chant? In 1886, chemistry professor E.H.S. Bailey created the chant for the KU science club saying Rah, Rah, Jayhawk KU. A few years later, it was changed to “Rock Chalk” to refer to the limestone buildings found all around campus. According to Teddy Roosevelt, it’s the greatest college chant he’d ever heard.
